Spiritual Care: Healthcare for the Whole Person by the Whole Team
Despite a desire to provide whole-person care, providers in post-acute and long-term care (PALTC) settings often express a lack of comfort and knowledge in providing spiritual care. In this session, participants will gain hands-on experience with spiritual care tools and activities that may be utilized in the care of both patients and PALTC staff, including: - Tools for spiritual and values assessments - Mindfulness practices - Rituals to honor loss at the bedside and at staff gatherings - Incorporation of spiritual values in advance care planning conversations The roles of chaplain, clergy and social workers will be clarified, and participants will engage in dialogue on when and how medical providers may make referrals to chaplain services. A framework for spiritual care in medicine will be discussed as well as resources available in PALTC settings.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this session, learners will be able to:
- Describe a framework for providing spiritual care to patients in PALTC settings.
- Demonstrate spiritual assessment using the FICA tool.
- Incorporate experiential activities into the spiritual care of PALTC residents and staff.
- Identify opportunities for referrals to chaplain services.
